Transport & Road Safety Campaign Group

Convener's Briefing
Transport is undoubtedly one of the top issues facing young people in the Highlands. Because of the geography of the area and the somewhat isolated communities, it is often very difficult for young people to travel to, for example, towns in order to access activities such as leisure centres, shops, etc. It is all very well attempting to improve the range of activities available for young people, however, these are of no use if it is difficult to get to them. Our campaign group want to improve the public transport system for young people and reduce the cost of transport for young adults who are still in full time education. Only recently has road safety been incorporated with our campaign group, however, already we have plans to improve road safety around school areas in particular to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by careless driving/ observation.
Campaign Group Updates
Our petition to the Scottish Parliament for free transport for young people in full time education has been suspended until the review of the National Entitlement Card has been complete. This is likely to be early in 2009.
We will be consulting with Highland schools in relation to road safety in an attempt to improve road safety measures around all Highland schols.
